• Evergreen Indigenous employment pathway

    The evergreen Indigenous employment program is a new initiative open only to Indigenous Australians. It is a two tiered development program that will build your skills and if you do well, you could get moved into a higher level job.

  • The role

    Evergreen provides great learning opportunities and on-the-job training which will help you build your workplace skills and work in a wide variety of roles. Successful applicants will be employed at the APS 2 level and on a permanent basis.

    During the program, you may be required to:

    • solve problems by researching information on tasks and responsibilities
    • respond to routine enquiries from clients
    • deal with external agencies or individuals in relation to administrative matters
    • apply basic computer skills to use office systems and software applications
    • assist more senior ATO employees.

    You don’t need previous work experience to be eligible for the program, you just need to be able to:

    • show common sense
    • work with others
    • work through problems
    • use a computer
    • communicate with others.

    The program is currently recruiting to the following sites:

    • Geelong
    • Chermside
    • Perth.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for the evergreen Indigenous development program you must be able to provide written evidence that you:

    • are of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
    • identify as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
    • are accepted as an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which you live or have lived
    • are an Australian citizen (section 22 of the Public Service Act 1999 requires APS employees to be Australian citizens) .

    Recruitment process

    All our jobs are filled on merit. This means we assess the suitability of applicants to do the duties of the job using a selection process.

    If your written application is successful we will ask you to come in for an interview.

    If you are unsuccessful we will notify you after the interview stage and give you some feedback once we have finished the selection process.

    When short listing applications, we specifically consider an applicant’s:

    • abilities
    • skills and knowledge
    • experience
    • qualifications, training and competence
    • standard of work performance
    • demonstrated potential for further development.

    We use a number of selection processes and a mix of assessment methods to assess an applicant’s suitability for the job. The assessment methods we may use include:

    • written applications
    • referee reports
    • relevant or specific skill tests
    • structured interviews.

    From this recruitment and selection exercise we may form an order of merit , and we may use it to fill similar vacancies, should they arise. We may use the order of merit for up to 12 months from when this job was advertised.

    Training

    You will have the opportunity to participate in a program of professional learning and development. This will include a range of activities such as:

    • group discussions
    • training workshops
    • on-the-job training
    • research assignments or projects
    • self-assessment
    • case study and scenario analysis.

    Corporate training

    The corporate learning component introduces you to our environment, work and people. We will provide you with professional development opportunities to help you work effectively in the ATO and the public service.

    Do I have to be an Australian citizen to work for the ATO?

    To be eligible for employment in the ATO, you must be an Australian citizen at the time you commence with the ATO or a current ongoing APS employee.

    Can I lodge a late application?

    Late applications may not be considered.

    I submitted my online application but have not received an acknowledgement?

    You should first check if one was sent by logging on to e-Recruitment external link, and clicking on 'My Profile' then 'My Emails'. If your acknowledgement is not shown email the contact officer for your particular vacancy.

    Can I make changes to my application after I lodge it?

    You are able to log into e-Recruitment and update your personal details at any time. However, you cannot change other details in your application such as your employment and education history, your statement detailing your claims to the positions, or your site preferences (if relevant to the vacancy in question). If there are significant issues that affect the information in your application, you should email the contact officer for your particular vacancy.

    What's involved in a criminal history records check?

    It is a condition of employment in the ATO that you agree to have a criminal history records check. You'll be asked to provide information about yourself and to give us the right to check any information you provide with relevant authorities such as the Australian Federal Police.
